We had what was supposed to be a special dinner. My wife, three children and I were joined by my wife's parents.
Our reservation was for 6 PM. After waiting 10-15 minutes, we were seated and the order taken at 6:30. Yes, I checked my watch at all these times. Our waitress told us it would take between 20 and 30 minutes, so I told the rest of the table to expect food by about 7 PM.
At about 7:05 our waitress stopped by to report that it would be another five or ten minutes. This was the first time we'd seen her since the order was taken. By this time we were getting pretty hungry. Finally, at 7:25 four plates were delivered. Our waitress told us the other three would be another three to five minutes. Finally, at 7:35, over an hour after ordering and an hour an a half after our reservation time, the other three plates made it.
The food was pretty good. The pumpkin curry had only a couple pieces of pumpkin, but was still flavorful. The honey BBQ chicken was a bit spicy and the hot and sour soup was "hotter" than expected, but hey--it's Thai food, right? So being spicier than expected is to be expected. Still, I'd be careful when ordering with children. The salmon curry sauce was good--could have used more sauce, but I love the fresh thai basil leaves.
When it came time to pay I stared at the bill, wondering about the total and how much of a tip to leave.
We ordered
1 Large hot and sour soup 7.95
1 yellow (vegetable) curry 9.95
1 pumpkin curry w/tempeh 10.95
1 pad thai w/chicken 9.95
2 thai honey BBQ chicken 10.95
10.95
1 salmon curry sauce 15.95
total 76.65
We'd had mediocre/poor service, even ignoring the very slow delivery of the food. I did not have a menu, and the bill was a bit of a jumble of orders, so I didn't really challenge the total of $88.15 (or so). I backed down from my initial impulse to leave a truly minimal tip, and settled on an even $100.00. That would give her about 15%, I thought. Less than I'd usually give, but considering the service, lack of updates, and near total lack of attention, etc, very fair--(you had to be there--the service was really poor).
After I came home I wondered about that total again. I looked up the menu, did the math and found that the total came to only $76.65. 15%, or about $11.50, was added automatically, WITHOUT telling us. There was NO mention of this on either our bill or the menu. In other words, I could find no stated policy related to an automatic gratuity.
That snapped it. Decent food is not offset by poor service and an unposted auto-grat policy. If you do go, read your bill carefully
