Emerald Thai is great! I have had Thai at many restaurants around the world & they do a great job. Have had no trouble communicating with the staff other than placing a phone/take out order. There was some confusion but is was cleared up & subsequently have not any problems since then. Bryan

I've eaten at Emerald Thai Wmbg about 5 times and ordered take-out at least 40 times over the past few years. I experienced a language barrier the first couple of times I went there and thought the portions were relatively small compared to many other american restaurants. Surprisingly the meal is much more filling that it appears due to the fact that many dishes come with delicious rice in a big bowl. Thankfully the language barrier has greatly improved over the years and the food is consistently good. The price seems good to me considering that most entrees are around $10-11. If you add soup, salad or an appetizer it'll cost you another $4-$7. Considering the high end ingredients and authentic flavors I consider it a deal. It is probably my favorite restaurant in the area. Another good place is Tequila rose on merrimac trail. Ambiance is so-so but the food is great. Ryan Smith

they missunderstood about the refilled coke. You can refill your soft drink without any additional charge!!!! I can have my glass filled so many time without any additional charge. The food was really great and I think the portion is reasonable. It seems small at the first time, but believe me or not, finally I had to ask for a box!! The best restuarant in my heart. Casey

I love this place. The food is excellent. True enough the portions are a bit small. I never had any problems with any of the staff communication wise. I like the location. The bill adds up though, and I think the prices should come down. The decor is nice as well. Lee and Holly

We decided to try Emerald Thai. We were very disappointed. Sorry, but it just wasn't good enough for us to recommend to anyone. Small portions, language barrier and true Thai flavors just didn't make it for us. Cait and Mary said that things tasted pretty much the same. We have to agree. A place to skip in Williamsburg. Cait

I can attest to Mary Leigh's comments below. This place is sub-par and does not deserve one star. Our food was nicely presented but the beef and chicken dishes basically tasted the same. I think Danny shouldn't be so hasty to say Mary Leigh was having a bad day. I'm afraid she is right on because we also had problems with our servers understanding simple drink orders and questions about the food. They need to improve or they will be closing up shop soon. Restaurant decor is nice - not too fancy. Mike

I am taking my wife out for a special evening. She has never eaten Thai food. I have traveled the world over so I am hopeful I won't be disappointed. From the reviews, it seems chances are 50/50 but I'll take the odds. I just came back from Baku, Azerbaijan and was surprised to have found a Thai restaurant there. It was absolutely fabulous. Here's hoping I have just as rewarding an experience here in the U.S. One bit of advice. Thai food is to be enjoyed by a group. It is simply awesome. Everyone orders a different dish/entree and all get to sample the eclectic flavors. A few bottles of good wine and all get to enjoy the atmosphere and being with friends. Take time out to smell the roses and enjoy the moment. Here's to a soon to be discovered culinary favorite I hope. Danny

I have been there many times along with its sister restaurants in Yorktown and Newport News. The food is excellent along with the service. I have ALWAYS found this to be true. Sounds like the first comment is from someone who was otherwise having a bad day or had another agenda.. Mary Leigh

What a disappointment. Servers could not communicate well and needed to leave the table to have our questions answered. All entrees looked like thin slices of chicken and beef that had been boiled with different sauces poured on top. Servers couldn't get the drink or food order straight with our party of 8. We loved Thai food and are used to 5 Star Thai restaurants. This doesn't even deserve one star. We will never return nor will our guest who accompanied us. While the decor was very tasteful, this place will not be in business one year from now. T.

I've been going to Emerald Thai reguarly and I think they do a fantastic job. The portion sizes are just right - they are only small if you are wanting to have left-overs. They have a diverse menu so you can always find something good - panang curry, pad see yew, spicy eggplant, tom kha, fried rice, basil chicken and the phad Thai are all great. The staff are always friendly and attentive, and I haven't had any problems with their English. chas

I've been to Emerald Thai about a dozen times, including on its opening day (by chance). Everything we've ever ordered has been very good, from soups to appetizers to entrees to drinks--and now they have sushi. (It was actually the best sushi I've ever had, and I've had it all over the country.) Service is terrific, prices are good, and the portion size is just right--it *looks* small when you get it, but just try to eat all that. Terrific place. Jose Oyola

Can't believe the review by Betty above! The food is excellent and the staff friendly. I've eaten here over a dozen times and have never been disappointed. Soups, curries, salads, and noodles are all excellent, and the staff is very friendly. Atmosphere is among the nicest for a Thai restaurant in the region -- bright green interior, aquariums, nicely furnished and decorated. The staff are very friendly and accomodating. food critic

Thought atmosphere was very nice. Restaraunt has modern look with bright but mellow green colors. Had the spicy fried fried rice and was very impressed. Only $9.95. Definitely will go back and possibly just for drinks! betty

I was excited to try this restaurant since there are no other Thai restaurants in town, however the food is ok and the portions are small. They also charge you for refills on soda without telling you first. We paid $7 for coke. The wait staff barley speaks english and the atmosphere is dark and boring. Anonymous

Thanks, Emerald Thai! Randomly stopped by on the way back from the hospital with my Mom. Got a takeout. They were helpful, steering me to the mild tofu in veggie broth soup. And rice rolls. That soup was light, lovely spice, and perfect for healthful recovery. It just made us happy. Going today to get some more broth for mom and something with spice for me. Thai soups and salads are restorative.
