My friend and I ate at this restaurant, having heard that it was well-reviewed. We both thought our meal was practically inedible. The fish that I was brought-I don't know how to describe it-oily and horrible comes to mind, and even the server seemed to think so as well. My friend's Thai tea was unlike anything she had tasted before- it was truly acrid. I looked around the room, thinking it was just us, but I've been eating terrific Thai food for over 25 years, and think of myself as well-versed in this cuisine, and I saw NO ONE'S meal that looked good-that was prepared in that fresh, vibrant style of cooking that is inimitably Thai. I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone-as there are a number of quite good restaurants in Bangkok-such as Harmonique, and the very upscale Salathip at the Shangri-La Hotel. Spice Market is not meant to be an exlcusively "Thai" restaurant. Instead, it's known for it's pan-asian styled cuisine, markedly different in style and preparation from any other restaurant in the city. There's no point comparing it with restaurants in Thailand - for the uninitiated, this is New York dining at it's finest. The chic and polished crowd, the decor marked by age old authentic Indian architecture, the ambience of instrumental music that trickles down the wooden pillars are all part of the Spice Market experience. Yes, I speak highly of this restaurant but with reason. Having been to umpteen restaurants in the city, I can attest to the fact that this is one place that you will not forget. Try to get a late evening reservation (post 9 PM), and even if that means a 2 week wait, it's certainly worth it.
